How to Clean Hardwood Floors

Let's talk hardwood floors! This week, I want to share some insights I've gained from working with several clients who have stunning hardwood floors. Hardwood flooring not only adds a natural aesthetic to your home but also offers easy cleaning, a versatile backdrop for decor, and can even increase your home's value. However, amidst the wealth of information on floor care, there are some crucial points worth noting to ensure your floors remain in pristine condition.

First and foremost, maintaining hardwood floors goes beyond occasional mopping. To prevent scratching and damage, consider using furniture sliders, cleaning floors before moving furniture, and avoiding abrasive cleaning tools like certain mops and vacuums. Opt for vacuums with rubber wheels and switch to the hard floor setting to prevent the brush roll from causing scratches. Simple practices like implementing a "no shoes inside" rule and strategic rug placement can greatly aid in upkeep.

Daily sweeping is essential for removing small dirt particles that could scratch the floor surface and maintain a hygienic environment. Vacuuming once a week, using the hard floor setting, further helps in keeping floors pristine.

When it comes to mopping, understanding whether your floors are sealed or unsealed is crucial. Sealed floors offer more protection against spills and water damage by preventing liquids from seeping into the wood. Unsealed floors require similar upkeep but with a bit less protection. Regardless, be mindful of water usage as excessive moisture can harm both finished and unfinished flooring. I prefer using a spray bottle with a solution containing castile soap, a pH-balanced alternative to vinegar, which I find safer for clients' homes (heres the recipe I use for that, thanks Clean Mama!). Coupled with an O-Cedar microfiber mop, this method effectively cleans without leaving streaks and ensures the mop doesn't become overly wet. For tougher spots, a non-abrasive scrubber like Scrub Daddy can be used, following the wood grain. After mopping or scrubbing, it's essential to promptly wipe up any excess liquid.

In essence, hardwood floor maintenance boils down to consistency and careful consideration of cleaning methods.
